Jesus the Light and Life - the Alpha and Omega

In my last blog, we saw how Jesus was and is the light of the world. That He came forth when God first spoke and brought light with Him.

In Revelation 1 we see the glorified Christ appearing to John on the isle of Patmos. John was exiled here because according to tradition, Nero tried to boil him in oil, but he swam out, unharmed. Here is where Jesus told him to write the Revelation of Jesus Christ.

The island of Patmos was a prison island at the time. Here is what it looks like today.

John heard a might voice like a trumpet and turned to see the glorified body of Jesus the Christ who was standing in the midst of 7 golden candlesticks.

Revelation 1:11  Saying, I am Alpha and Omega, the first and the last: and, What thou seest, write in a book, and send it unto the seven churches which are in Asia; unto Ephesus, and unto Smyrna, and unto Pergamos, and unto Thyatira, and unto Sardis, and unto Philadelphia, and unto Laodicea.
12  And I turned to see the voice that spake with me. And being turned, I saw seven golden candlesticks;
13  And in the midst of the seven candlesticks one like unto the Son of man, clothed with a garment down to the foot, and girt about the paps with a golden girdle.
14  His head and his hairs were white like wool, as white as snow; and his eyes were as a flame of fire;
15  And his feet like unto fine brass, as if they burned in a furnace; and his voice as the sound of many waters.
16  And he had in his right hand seven stars: and out of his mouth went a sharp twoedged sword: and his countenance was as the sun shineth in his strength.

17  And when I saw him, I fell at his feet as dead. And he laid his right hand upon me, saying unto me, Fear not; I am the first and the last:
18  I am he that liveth, and was dead; and, behold, I am alive for evermore, Amen; and have the keys of hell and of death.
19  Write the things which thou hast seen, and the things which are, and the things which shall be hereafter;
20  The mystery of the seven stars which thou sawest in my right hand, and the seven golden candlesticks. The seven stars are the angels of the seven churches: and the seven candlesticks which thou sawest are the seven churches.

It is difficult to capture the image of the majesty of our Lord as he appeared to John. He later saw Him as the lamb slain and the Lion of the tribe of Judah.

The candle stick described in Exodus 25 was actually the menorah, a beautiful golden 7 branched candelabra that had oil lamps on each branch. This was the light of the tabernacle and the Holy place.
Each piece of furniture in the Holy place represented Christ in different ways. The menorah being His light or the "light of the world." (John 8:12) This probably was what John saw on Patmos, only the heavenly one.

According to the Talmud and the Malbim it was very ornate with many different parts specifically designed by God. The menorah was one piece of gold weighing 100 pounds and 5 foot high. It represents many things including the first words of each of the books of the Torah.
I want to focus on the 7 branches which represent the 7 Hebrew words of Genesis 1:1.

Hebrew reads right to left, so:

The picture of the Menorah here is from the Temple Institute in Israel. You will note that of the 7 Hebrew words of Genesis 1:1 only 6 are translated. In the KJV Bible, it reads in English: "In the beginning, God created the heaven and the earth." The middle word is not translated which is Aleph Tav which is the first and the last letters of the Hebrew alphabet. Jesus spoke in Revelation 1 and 22 that he was the Alpha and Omega which is from the first and last letters of the Greek alphabet. He would have spoken in Hebrew to John, and would have said He was the Aleph and Tav. (In English; A and Z). This is a signature of Jesus, and is found in this first verse of the Bible, not translated because it was not known how. It is the beginning and the end, the creation and the conclusion of all things.

It is totally fitting because Jesus is the light of the world (John 8:12). He is the center of the Bible. Everything is based on His work, not ours. He is the salvation of God for mankind. He is the embodiment of Grace. Through Him we receive all the blessings of God according to the promises contained in His Word.

Jesus' signature, Aleph Tav את, is found 8 times in the first chapter of the Bible. In the 2nd chapter it is found 10 times. None of these are translated. All of them are important. It is like a secret that no one has understood. Hebrew is the wonderful language that God gave man. Each letter has a picture meaning. Each letter is a number. Each letter is a musical note It is marvelous to me that the Holy Ghost put Jesus' signature through out the Hebrew scriptures. 

In Numbers 15 we see that the LORD told Moses to tell the children of Israel to make "fringes on the borders of their garments" perpetually. This was the tallit or prayer shawl.

This was the "fringe" of Jesus' garment that the woman with the issue of blood crawled through the crowd to touch and was instantly healed. The fringe is called tzitzit. Jesus would have always had His tallit on. This woman had said to herself that if she would just touch the fringe of this Holy man's garment, she would receive healing.  Jesus told her that her faith had made her well, Matthew 9, Mark 5, and Luke 8. This fringe by the Hebrew numbers of the knots tied represents the whole law of God; 613 commandments.

Numbers 15:38-39 Speak unto the children of Israel, and bid them that they make them fringes in the borders of their garments throughout their generations, and that they put upon the fringe of the borders a ribband of blue:
39  And it shall be unto you for a fringe, that ye may look upon it, and remember all the commandments of the LORD, and do them;...

In Hebrew you will read: "...and they shall put on the fringe of each corner a thread of blue. And it shalll be to you for a fringe that you may look upon it and remember - Aleph Tav את -  all the commands of Jehovah, and do them...   Aleph Tav is not translated...it is Jesus. Aleph is the sacrificial ox and Tav is the ancient cross.

The blue ribbon in the fringe was representing Jesus. Remembering Him when we see it, that He kept all the commandments of God and that we are the righteousness of God in Him, 2Corinthians 5:21. 

So, in understanding the Grace and awesome benevolence of God, we see ourselves in the light of Jesus, God's most precious gift who has become sin, that we might be His righteousness. We can never keep the commandments of God to His perfection, but in Jesus, God looks upon us as covered by His blood and therefor innocent and righteous in God's eyes.

 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin, 1 John 1:7.

It is interesting to me that the dye that made the blue on the tallit came from a snail in the Middle East. We have already established that the blue in the fringe represented Jesus. When Judaism rejected their Messiah, and the blue color was used for royalty at great price,  the snail became extinct after a few hundred years. It takes about 8500 snails to make 1 gram of blue dye.The process of making the dye was lost. You will see that most of the tallits in Judaism are just white on the fringes or tzitzit.

But, recently the snail has revived and made an appearance and the original dye can be reproduced again after careful study of how the dye was extracted. I know that there are many of the children of Israel who have come to know Jesus as their Savior. It is something that this extinct snail is back after 1500 years.

Isaiah prophesied by the Holy Spirit 700 years before the birth of Jesus on the earth in 9:6..For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace. This is our King, Jesus.

Yet by the Grace of our wonderful Father, we that have the Spirit of Jesus in our spirit have been made to be kings and priests and sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus, Revelation 1:6, Ephesians 2:6.

Every possible need we have was bought and paid for by Jesus' obedience and passion of the cross.

When Jesus cried, "It is finished!" the debt for man's sin had been paid. The veil of the temple, that separated God from man was ripped supernaturally from the top to the bottom. Now as told by the angels that announced at His birth there was "Peace on earth and goodwill toward men." In Hebrew, this is shalom, which means completeness, wholeness, nothing broken, and nothing missing. This Peace, is between God and man. It is available to all who believe and ask Jesus to be their Lord.

Religion has in general stepped away from the Salvation that God Himself offered to man. In general the concept that is taught is that if you are good enough, God may accept you. No one is good enough. God is perfect and requires perfection. The only man ever to achieve this was Jesus of Nazareth, the Christ. When we receive Him into our spirit, we become a new creature, 2 Corinthians 5:17. This is God's gift and the only way to have Salvation.
Ephesians 2:8  For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: 9  Not of works, lest any man should boast.

Forgiveness is a wonderful thing, when we come to Jesus he forgives us for our sin. We must ask  for forgiveness and be ready to repent, which is to change the way we think and act.

Sin is always destructive and has the seeds of death, but with Jesus' Spirit inside of your spirit you can be led in life and have power to resist temptation. The love and Grace of God is so strong that you can succeed in life and walk forever with God. He not only forgives, but forgets your sins.
Psalms 103:11  For as the heaven is high above the earth, so great is his mercy toward them that fear him. 12  As far as the east is from the west, so far hath he removed our transgressions from us.

When God looks on the Christian, He sees the blood of Jesus and not our imperfection. He became the curse that we might have the blessing. He became sin that we might be His righteousness. We are truly God's children in Jesus. Galatians 3:26  For ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus.

What does that mean for us? We live in a world that is dominated by the devil, who stole the authority that God had gave Adam. But, Jesus came to destroy the works of the devil, 1 John 3:8. Even though problems and attacks come our way, in Christ we can be victors in life. Not that this will be easy, but we are assured that God will be with us, in us, and for us by His written word, 1 Corinthians 14:25, Psalms 56:9, Zachariah 8:23.

Paul said, I can do all things through Christ Jesus that strengtheneth me, Philippians 4:13. This is concerning the things, problems, and cares of this life. Through Jesus, you can win, now and forever.

As the light of the world, Jesus is the one who will see us through all our problems, now and forever. He has made us a dwelling place with Him that is eternal, John 14:3.

The new Jerusalem is something that can only be imagined, as it is so glorious, yet it is our future home.

This is Heaven. We who belong to Christ Jesus are guaranteed to have an eternal home here, Revelation 21.

John was shown a vision of the New Jerusalem in Revelation 21.

This is the dwelling place for all who belong to Jesus Christ for all eternity. I pray that you will make the decision to make that your place of residence.

LIGHT of God...of the World

When we go to the Book of beginnings we see that the first thing that God spoke in recorded scripture is, "Let there be light", Genesis 1:3. Immediately there was light.

This was the beginning of day 1. We know that this light was not from the sun, because the sun was not lit up until day 4. This was a light directly from God.

In Hebrew the word "God" here is Elohiym, אלהים. This is plural. That is because God exists in three. In Genesis 1:1-3 we see the three:
"In the beginning, God".... this is the Father (Elohiym)
"And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters"....this is the 3rd person of the Godhead, the Spirit of God.
"And God said.." this is God's Word, the 2nd person of the Godhead. John 1:1, "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God."
"And God saw the light that is was good..."

The name by which God revealed Himself is not written until Genesis 2:4. This is Jehovah,  יהוה, but out of respect for the Holy Name is rendered as LORD in the King James Bible. Some try to pronounce as, Yahweh. For the Hebrews it is a name that cannot be pronounced. There was an elaborate ritual that went into Hebrews transcribing "the Name" which included bathing and changing clothes as well as new ink whenever they encountered His Holy Name.

Even now orthodox Judaism say, HaShem, while meditating on יהוה. This name shortened is Jah or Ya ,יה, which we see in Halleujah and Elijah; which mean, praise to Jehovah and God's strength of Jehovah respectively.


When God sent His son into the world to be born of a woman, he was to be named, Jesus. In Hebrew this is   Joshua or Yeshuah. The first letters are, יה, or Jah. The translation of the name Joshua is: Jehovah is Salvation. Jesus is part of the Godhead and was born on earth as the Messiah, God in flesh.

So back to God's first words in Genesis 1:3. Literally translated, God said Bring forth light. The Hebrew word to "bring forth" is Yahee, יהי. Can you see it? The first thing out of the mouth of God was Jah! The name of Jesus! With Him came light. This was supernatural light that dominated darkness and emanated from Him who later said "I am the light of the world", John 8:12.

We as Christians know this, but it is always wonderful to find further evidence that Jesus is the manifestation of God. In Jesus dwells the fullness of the Godhead, Colossians 2:9.

John 1 further states that the life of Jesus was the light of men. By Him were all things made that were made.
He was the Word of God made into the flesh of man. He is the one who made the world, but the world did not recognize Him.

I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life, John 8:12.

Jesus is not telling us that we have to by our own will be righteous as He is. He is telling us to follow Him in His light and His righteousness.  2Corinthians 5:21,  For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.

Psalms 56:13  For thou hast delivered my soul from death: wilt not thou deliver my feet from falling, that I may walk before God in the light of the living?

God would not have included this in scripture if we could not do it.

The light of Jesus is the place where we were meant to dwell. Not just in eternity, but here, now.

Jesus is the living Word and light is with Him. So, when we read the Bible we release some of His light into our lives.

The paths of our lives can be lighted and direction given if we would but walk in the light where Jesus is.

The Word of God is direction for us in the paths of our life.

Walking in the light with Jesus is something we learn and practice by faith here on planet earth.

In Jesus' light and in His salvation we are led to the life and light which is eternal and will never end.
John 3:21...he that doeth truth cometh to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God.

1John 1:5,  This then is the message which we have heard of him, and declare unto you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all.

When Ezekiel saw the Lord (8:2), he described God as appearing as a fire from His loins downward and a fire from His loins upward.

In 1Timothy 6, Paul writes to Timothy of the light of Jesus, verse 16,  Who only hath immortality, dwelling in the light which no man can approach unto; whom no man hath seen, nor can see: to whom be honour and power everlasting. Amen.
Yet because of Jesus' sacrifice on the tree for us, we are able to walk in His light because of His goodness and not our own, by faith, and in His love.

Truly, His blood cleanses us from all sin, and we can walk in His light. A place for us to dwell and receive that which God has prepared for us, in the Grace that only comes through Christ Jesus.

The light that came into the world from the first word that God spoke is also the light that will be here on earth for eternity.

You see, it has always been God's plan to move heaven to earth. In the last chapters of Revelation, we see that the New Jerusalem comes down from heaven to earth. Revelation 21:2 And I John saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband.

3  And I heard a great voice out of heaven saying, Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and he will dwell with them, and they shall be his people, and God himself shall be with them, and be their God.

The dimensions of this city are approximately 1500 miles X 1500 miles X 1500 miles. When that description is given, most imagine a cube.

I believe that God in His magnificent Glory will plant the New Jerusalem on and in the earth in a way that makes a perfect balance.

The Word says that the city will have no need of the light of the sun, because the light of God and Jesus will light the city. Now, it does not say there is no sun, for the rest of the earth needs the sun.

The kings of the earth will come on the Lord's feasts and bring their honor and glory before God in the city. There the saved can bask in the light of God.

Coming out from the thrones of God and Jesus is the river of the water of life. On each side of the river are the trees of life which bear fruit every month. When humans eat of this they never age. The leaves of the trees are for healing of the nations. Apparently people still get hurt. We know that there will be no disease or sickness there. 

I believe that the city will look nothing like our cities. The walls will look natural like mountains, but garnished with precious stones and translucent gold.

It will be more than we can imagine, beautiful and natural inside. As it is written, Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him, 1 Corinthians 2:9.

There will be many who are immortal that have been transformed or resurrected as is described in Corinthians and Thessalonians and have a glorified body, similar to the body that Jesus has. But there will be a world full of people, just like Adam. And, now in the glorious light of God and Jesus they will eat of the tree of life and never age...never die. Yes, the end of the Bible is day one of eternity. 

Back to the light of life that Christians have in them and are able to walk in the light of Jesus. Our Lord spoke of us sharing this light...

Matthew 5:14  Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid.

15  Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house.

We are to let Jesus' light shine to the world through us. By His Grace and guidance of the Holy Ghost and the Spirit of Christ in us we can be faithful servants of the King of the universe and be a blessing to those around us. So that they might learn of God and come to Him for He loves people and it is not His will that any would perish.
